My Johnny’s Fan History
Jan. 8th, 2021 10:10 pmHey there! I might have directed you here for two reasons: (1) for basic introductions, or (2) because you were genuinely curious about my history as a Johnny’s fan. Either way, welcome! :D
I’ll make my basic introduction short (cue air quotes) to save you some time. The hardcore ones will read to the end anyway, lol.
Now that’s out of the way, let’s go into the details, shall we? (UPDATED: 2021/08/21)
Okay, so I don’t know how much even my friends/mutuals of 5 or so years know about me in general, much less personal (I’m 100% sure only a handful of people know what I do for a living lol), so this is a much needed post? Maybe? Fine, I’ll start now. XD
And you read that right, I’ve been a fan for 13 years. I haven’t been definitely a 24/7 Johnny’s fan (believe it or not) as my short attention span usually makes me jump from fandom to fandom. While I may not tweet/talk about it as much, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen all the time.
Late December 2007. It all started with HanaKimi. During a Christmas family gathering, my cousin recommended that I watch it, and not even finishing the first episode, I was hooked. I turned to watch other J-dramas after that, even Arashi ones—HanaDan being the first. I even remember downloading the JCD 2007-2008 only for Toma, not even kidding.
My official Arashi turning point was Kimi wa Petto (this would be hilarious some years later because V6 lol). Even though I knew of Jun then, the interest didn’t come in until that drama. And my first official Arashi video was Arashi’s appearance in Utaban in March 2008. (Remember Nakai as the boulder? THAT ONE.) The single at the time was Step and Go.
Believe it or not, my first favorite was Aiba.
But then Yamada Taro happened. The switch happened a month after, and Nino has become my favorite ever since.
I proceeded to watch Arashi stuff from then on and I would be an avid viewer of Shukudai-kun in particular that I would watch that show in real time every week. I also have never had a second or third favorite in Arashi. The second place usually rotated among all members, though some would be more common than others.
My most active years in the Arashi fandom was from 2008 to around mid-2009. After that, when I started working as an intern for my college requirements, my attention quickly shifted to watching stuff other than Arashi. It was a mix of other J-drama and non-J&A J-pop groups but mostly Western shows and fandoms. Knowing how busy the Arashi fandom is in general, I started to realize that I couldn’t keep up with everything and I got exhausted, until about early 2011 or so was when I finally stopped diligently seeking Arashi stuff. Twitter even at the time was doing a good job of that already, anyway.
A little segue but important: Some of my friends already know this as well, the main reason I stopped blogging on LJ and even on my personal blog was because of Twitter. Everything I thought of blogging, I could already tweet about, so LJ stopped being a necessity aside from downloading stuff.
Before I forget! I’ve also watched an Arashi concert live (BokuMite) in December of 2010 through an auction (or third-party site) and I would never spend that much on a ticket again, as much as I love Arashi or V6 or Snow Man. That is a severely unfair system, especially now that we can easily watch concerts online. But I digress!
How I got into V6 was one of my college friends getting into Arashi in late 2012. It’s weird when I say it like that but that’s really how it happened. XD She asked me for Arashi vids I’ve kept for more than four years at this point, with the demise of MU at the time, she didn’t know where she could find old Arashi vids so I became her main source. And as I checked those old vids, I came across Gakkou e Ikou again with Nino in 2008. I remember going, “Oh, this was a fun video when I first watched it live!” and I definitely know V6 and their songs at this point (I’ve always liked them as well when I see them in things) but I never got into them as a group completely until this point. Gakkou e Ikou was it for me. Everything snowballed into the fan I am today.
That was September 2012. The single out at the time was kEEP oN, so I watched a ton of kEEP oN performances back then. Sekubani con came out earlier that year too so Sekubani was my first V6 concert. And I was blown away. I think this was an official turning point of where I stood with V6.
Just like Arashi, my first favorite was different to whom I settled on eventually, although Ken had been a “favorite” before I got into V6 as a group. So I had rotating favorites during the first few months—on Twitter I would even change my DP every week or so depending on whom I found funny or whom I was fond of. XD
I also had a Hiroshi/Inocchi phase for a while. I thought I would be a Hiroshi-tan for sure at one point! LOL
Several months later, Johnny’s International (RIP) presented me an opportunity to go and see V6 for their Oh! My! Goodness! Tour. I didn’t need an FC membership to see them, so why not, right? And so I did! I took my dad with me because he didn’t want me to go alone. XD
And in retrospect, OMG might have been the one that turned me into an Inocchi fan. Friends have told me so, too. There was a lot of it in play: Inocchi’s uchiwa getting sold out (and me looking for it FOR YEARS), Inocchi’s fan being chosen during BINGO, Inocchi’s hair in that, Inocchi in general… I knew right there and then that I would have a favorite and it’s still true to this day. XD
So I have been a fan of V6 for 8 years now. Damn. I still feel like a new fan in a lot of ways but I guess I’m not anymore?
I also had a huge SMAP/Shingo phase around 2015... and other groups like TOKIO, Eito, Ebi and Kinki. I’m still a huge fan of these groups though of course I don’t follow them as much as I do V6.
And I had a Kinpuri phase for some of 2018 (time of their debut). It’s not constant—I used to be a closet fan until maybe 2019 or so when I showed my friends a collection of Ren mags I got just because, LOL. Maybe they are not a group I will very closely follow always but I do love keeping up with them when I do have the time.
So, how did I get into Snow Man? (This is probably the longest entry here and idk why but there’s just an element of emotional hardships and that played a huge role in how I got into them.)
I got into Snow Man officially around November of last year. I always make a joke that when V6 takes a break, that’s usually the window I get into other fandoms. V6’s biggest break for me as a fan happened during 2016 (no albums or tours, only one single that year) and I got into a YT gaming group, like very heavily until recently. I’ll get back to this topic later for an important reason.
So Snow Man came in just as V6 finished their 25th anniversary concert (Nov. 1) and immediately took a break. XD V6 as a fandom has always allowed us to breathe and do other things (our real lives) as they do the same, so the chillness of it has always appealed to me.
Many of my friends and mutuals already know this: It was October. This was the time I was at my lowest point, emotionally. The YT gaming group I got into, one of my favorites there turned out to be not the person I was admiring, and for a while, the reason I enjoyed that group was partly because of him. It was hard to realize that something I consumed literally every day was now suddenly unbearable to watch. I didn’t know how to deal with something so wrecking emotionally—thankfully V6 was there and they got me excited just in time for their 25th anniversary concert.
But afterwards, V6 suddenly left a hole within me as they took a break. And I don’t blame them for it! I never do! They did wonderfully and it made me really happy, it’s everything I can ask for an online concert for V6, but that sudden end, as it turned out, I wasn’t really ready for. I then figured I’d been used to this fandom after all, so I knew that all I had to do was turn my attention to somewhere else for the time being. So that I will be ready for when they come back again!
For the first half of November, I tried: Catch up with V6 I missed that year or even a few years back, maybe fix my overly disorganized V6 files, download what I still didn’t have, watch Inocchi do his movie promotions (and cry about how I won’t get to see it for a while), etc.
Funny looking back on it that the main thing that shifted my attention to Snow Man was the choreography video they did for KimiKare. Not the dance practice, the choreography one. Who knew Koji kicking Fukka in the air was the reason I’m here now? XD
Kidding aside, even so, that wasn’t the first time I knew about Snow Man. I don’t watch Shokura regularly, so like with other juniors, I only know them if they co-starred with a senpai or when they debut. (Someone knows this to be untrue now. lol.) The first time I heard of Snow Man was when a friend mentioned going to Singapore to watch Takizawa Kabuki back in 2015. That friend is a Sakuma fan, and that I remember very vividly. Then of course during Ken’s stint in Kabuki a year later. Fun fact: I planned on watching Takizawa Kabuki back in 2018 but I failed to ballot that time because I didn’t know I’d be going to Japan in April prior to that.
So basically my knowledge of Snow Man was from Kabuki or from friends. I have a few friends that are Snow Man fans (you know who you are ♥) so through tweets and such they aren’t completely foreign to me, plus despite not being a regular viewer I’ve been actually subscribed to the Jr. channel ever since it launched.
Like newer fans, SunoTube was my way in. It’s the most convenient way to get into them without downloading stuff (though that comes after of course XD). And because I have a lot to catch up to, they essentially became a good way to distract myself from the previous month’s incident.
Now, favorites in Snow Man... TBH I don't like declaring favorites nowadays until maybe about three months later (not that I don't have one (or two...) right now…) but I seem to be cursed whenever I declare one and then it changes months later. I mean, it should be obvious in my Twitter, right? Right? XD
And I will join the FC once I find a way to pay for it. XD
So there. It’s up to date now! Honestly, even after all this, I don't consider myself a Janiwota (I have friends who are MUCH more deserving than me) but my irl friends treat me as such so idk lol. Maybe I am? Let me know LOL
Lastly! Some questions I’ve thought about as I wrote this:
Q1. Do I rank my idols?
The simple answer is I don’t. I have a favorite, yes, but depending on the group, I usually don’t do a straight ranking (1-5, 1-6 or 1-9). I can have a second or third favorite but it usually ends there. I don’t tend to love a group and then try to rank them, the Libra in me would be crying.
Q2. Do my faves have to be similar to me or different? Do I have a type?
I talked about this with a friend once. I might have a type? Usually the main difference I have with my faves are they’re great conversationalists, MCs. I’m awkward and quiet in real life, so I tend to like those who are good with words and can carry a conversation effortlessly.
Q3. How do I think of them as?
When I was younger, like most teenagers, it’s hard not to “fall in love” with people you admire. Hell, I still do but now it’s in a more of supporting capacity rather than romantic. I’m, like, happy to support them and that’s it. lol (Snow Man is changing my mind a bit but we'll see lol)
Q4. Even if I’m not a hardcore fan of other groups, do I have favorites in them?
Yes, I do. I’m too lazy to do all of them at the moment and maybe I’ll update this in the future! (Just know that I love Taichi.) Same with Jrs. Though, I will protect Noel and Micchi with my life, okay.
UPDATE (2021/08/21):
So, now that 8 months have passed (Man, where did time go? O_O), I figured that I should give you some updates! After all, I find it so hilarious that I never mentioned here who my favorites in Snow Man were when it's been pretty obvious the entire time. I guess, at that point, I had a different "bias wrecker"? Anyway, I will try not to make it as long as the main entry (lol).
- I wrote this two months before the announcement of V6 disbanding which will happen on November of this year (sobs) and, looking back on it, the "sad" feeling I experienced after watching the 25th anniversary concert made sense now. And I know, some fans have been like "How did anyone see it coming?" I didn't. But somehow, there was a feeling of dread that I couldn't explain then. In fact, on November 2 of last year I tweeted something like "Why can't I enjoy things as they are?" which says something about how I felt during that time.
- Favorites in Snow Man. If you don't know by now, then clearly you are not on Twitter or haven't been following me, lol. It's Abe and Fukka. To be honest, when I first saw Fukka I instantly knew he would be someone I'd really like. And I was right. But what I didn't anticipate was Abe. I didn't even know Abe before I got into Snow Man, but because I had been in a weird quiz show kick then (starting with rewatching a bunch of Nep League with V6 on it), somehow Abe managed to worm his way into my heart (I guess as he tends to do, gdi). Most of my variety show downloads then (around the time of his birthday, too) were his quiz show appearances, no joke. Now, bias wrecker. My first answer was Meme, but then Shota suddenly was up there and :| Do not allow me to watch concerts because I will just gush over Shota relentlessly.
- I have joined Snow Man's FC a few days after this post! :D
- Q2 update: Aside from those traits above, I've been told they're all really nice guys, too? Which, it says a lot, lol.
- Q3 update: You know, despite being not romantically interested (that vacillates a lot, dw), personally, I don't think it's really bad or weird to give in to their idol side of being attracted to them and whatnot. It is part of their job, after all, and it only becomes bad once fans take it seriously and give in to the delusion of it and make it a reality. (I know I didn't need to say that, but you never know.) I've realized that because Snow Man to me is an entirely different fandom than V6 despite both being J&A talents. Some will know what I mean, lol.
- Q4: I also know more juniors than ever (I know the grouped ones but not all of the members of those *looks at ShoNin*). I can definitely name a few faves (debuted and juniors) if I so inclined. Maybe I'll tweet it in a photo or write a different entry about it since this is already long, lol.
That's it for now! Maybe I'll update it again when something significant in "my history" happens but that's as far as it goes for now. Let me know what else you might want to know about me and I'm willing to oblige! Even personal stuff! See you around :D
I’ll make my basic introduction short (cue air quotes) to save you some time. The hardcore ones will read to the end anyway, lol.
- Jessie
- From the Philippines (Batangas)
- Throughout the years as my being a Johnny’s fan, I’ve been known to use the following usernames: jadenmd (formerly LJ and Twitter), 1nightsupernova (current Twitter and LJ), taboonalady (everywhere else, usually personal accounts), perfectlyimperfect (DW)
- I’ve also used a couple of nicknames. Jaden used to be my pseudonym. Friends from my first few years as a fan know me as Jess. I use Jessie now (it’s mainly to avoid being found out lol), but that doesn’t mean I don’t respond to Jess! After all, Jess is what people call me irl—family, high school and college friends, etc.
- I started being a fan back in December 2007.
- The order of my main fandoms has been: Toma → Arashi → V6 → V6/Snow Man
